Sitting in a bright pink dress and sipping on a glowing drink at the season 5 premiere party of RuPaul’s Drag Race at NYC’s XL nightclub, new contestant Detox discusess preparing for the show and why she thinks season 5 is the best season yet.
“I feel like it’s long overdue,” she says about her being a star on the new 5th season of Drag Race. “Alaska and I have tried out so many seasons, so it’s great to finally be acknowledged and chosen for the show. Though I am glad that I kind of took as long as I did because I feel like I was truly ready for it this year, whereas before I wasn’t as ready,” she admits. “I was here last year for the finale and being here this year with my own season is brilliant.”
Detox had mainstream success in 2012 with her song “Chow Down” that she did with former Drag Race contestant Willam and Vicky. She was on tour throughout the Northeast for the song when she found out she was going to be on Drag Race. “I literally landed from a gig on a Monday and had to throw all my shit in a bag and I got picked up that same Monday afternoon to go film the show. So I had no prep time at all. It was insane.”
Drag Race has gotten increasingly popular each year, and even greater success has followed the contestants post-RuPaul. So how does Detox live up to this new standard? “There’s a lot of pressure. This season specifically has so much talent and so many big names that I don’t even know what they’re going to do next year! This year is going to blow everything out of the water. We’re being coined as the most epic season ever!”
