Alaska pulled out a gun that I can only assume shoots fabulousness when I asked for a photo. I couldn’t help but post even though I look like shit, so just ignore me!

RuPaul’s Drag Race season 5 contestant Alaska talks about living up to the success of Sharon Needles, being a super fan of the show, and her “trash to treasure” fashion.

“I’m having an awesome time. I love the flashbulbs and the carpet, it’s like therapeutic to me watching them go off. I could watch it all day,” she says just after being barraged by flashing light bulbs and the screams of photographers at the RuPaul’s Drag Race season 5 premiere party at NYC’s XL nightclub.

“I grew up in a shantytown in Pennsylvania. I’m definitely like the trash to treasure, the garbage to glamour and I love taking like really cheap stuff and making it look less cheap,” she says, explaining her fashion style. “I find there’s real beauty in being cheap.”

Alaska’s situation is unique since her boyfriend and fellow drag queen Sharon Needles won last season’s Drag Race competition. “I feel a huge pressure because Sharon did so well, so just the expectations are so high and that’s really scary!” But she isn’t letting her nerves get to her and is continuing on as a self-proclaimed super fan of the show. “I’m obscenely obsessed. I’ve seen like every episode a dozen times,” she explained. “I’ve already watched the first episode of this season like four times.”

See Alaska on the season 5 premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race Monday, January 28th at 9 PM ET/PT.
